William Appleton is an accomplished sports attorney committed to providing elite representation to the professional athlete. A former collegiate athlete and graduate of UCLA, he pursued his law degree with one goal in mind, becoming a competent and respected sports attorney who defines his success by the quality representation provided to the athlete. Mr. Appleton graduated with honors from Marquette University Law School, earning a special certification in sports law from the National Sports Law Institute, widely recognized as the premier sports law program in the nation. While attending Marquette, he was a senior member of the editorial staff of the Marquette Sports Law Review and earned national CALI academic awards in Amateur Sports Law and International and Comparative Sports Law. Mr. Appleton specifically tailored his law school curriculum to acquire the skill set required in the sports representation industry, successfully completing courses and workshops in sports law, tax law, business entity formation, and professional sports contract negotiation.
Mr. Appleton's professional career is no less impressive. He interned with the Milwaukee Brewers legal department, working on legal issues specific to stadium naming rights and international taxation of professional athletes, and the Stadium Operations department of the Ft. Myers Miracle, Single A affiliate to the Minnesota Twins. Mr. Appleton worked as special assistant to both the Assistant Director and Director of the National Sports Law Institute. In addition, Mr. Appleton served as assistant to the Chairman of the NCAA Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects in Sport, which serves as the NCAA's drug testing appeals committee. In this capacity, he prepared legal memorandum utilized in the rules review process and obtained specialized knowledge specific to the legal issues regarding drug testing for performance enhancing drugs.
Prior to launching ASM, Mr. Appleton worked in the South Pacific as a staff attorney for an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Mariana Islands, and for a Superior Court Judge in the United States Virgin Islands.
Mr. Appleton is a licensed attorney and NFLPA Certified Contract Advisor.
