crystal_wright_5My Story

“My parents moved to Jackson Hole to be ski bums in the 70’s and have resided there ever since. I remember skiing on wooden skis down my driveway when I was 2 years old. When I was five years old my family took a managing position at Big Sandy Ranch in Pinedale, Wyoming, right at the base of the Wind River Mountain range. The ranch was 2 hours from Jackson, 50 miles from the closest town and had no electricity. So I would spend my summers on a ranch and my winters in Jackson, I felt very lucky to live in two such beautiful places. I started showing horses, barrel racing and roping when I was nine years old, that is how I would spend my summers. Having the Wind River and Teton mountain ranges in my back yard has also opened me up to the world of rock climbing and mountain biking which I love almost as much as skiing.”

I started ski racing with the Jackson Hole Ski Club when I was nine and worked my way up the ranks of ski racing. I became a member of the Western Region Elite Ski Team when I was 15 and later traveled with U.S. Ski Team through Europe and South America until I was 20 years old. In 2002 I was chosen to forerun the Women’s Olympic downhill in Snowbasin Utah and was the first person to ski the course. It was one of the best experiences of my life being able to compete with the best women skiers in the world. I also had many top 5 results in various downhill Nor-Americans and raced Europa Cup downhills. I then went on to college where I had to transfer my talent to the technical events and raced NCAA skiing at Montana State University. I also was a member of the Rodeo team as well, so I traveled much during the fall and winter months of college.

“During my racing career I have never lost my love for freeskiing and skiingthe Jackson Hole backcountry. I couldn’t wait until my racing career was over and I would be able to compete and ski on the big mountain circuit. Through all my years of racing the one thing that kept me competing at such a high level for so long was being able to go ski powder and steeps with my friends and family. So now I am excited to say that after many great years of ski racing and the worldly experiences that I gained from it, I am pursuing my goal as a professional big mountain skier.”

Core Beliefs and Goals:

Tanya Wagner is not only an elite athlete, she is a true fitness role model and teacher. Tanya defines the term “Champion” …on and off the field. She demonstrates that it is possible to possess strength, beauty, endurance, power and passion , without sacrificing intelligence, integrity and character. Since winning the 2009 CrossFit Fittest Woman on the Planet title and exploding into the national fitness spotlight, Tanya has aggressively pursued additional fitness certification and continues to compete professionally. As a physical education teacher and gym owner, Tanya has put her new title to work, making numerous personal appearances involving important fitness issues facing America's youth, including childhood obesity and self-image.

“I am all for combatting childhood obesity and teaching educators how to do that more effectively. I would love to see the state standards for physical fitness much stricter and require students to be more physically active. Physical Education needs to be more about creating a healthy student who is knowledgeable on how to take care of their body and stay physically fit into adulthood”.

“I love to talk to young girls about the importance of being a strong female and making smart choices about your body and having a positive self image. I meet with a neat group class for adolescent girls to help them learn to respect their bodies as they grow and develop. I think young women need to see that strong is beautiful and that muscles are pretty and having healthy women role models can help them see this”.

Tanya’s athletic achievements have inspired thousands world-wide. Tanya embraces this responsibility and opportunity to impact others through fitness:

I hope that I can be that positive role model for my students as well as for my athletes and others. I want to be able to inspire people to push themselves and believe in themselves to be able to do things they never imagined.

About Crossfit:

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning fitness methodology. Its stated goal is to create “the quintessential athlete, equal parts gymnast, Olympic weightlifter, and sprinter.” CrossFit is not sport-specific but rather “the sport of fitness”. CrossFit exemplifies the transformation of “workouts” into “sport”. Athletes are trained to bike, run swim and row at short, middle, and long distances.

CrossFit maintains that proficiency is required in each of 10 fitness domains: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and thousands of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

CrossFit defies categorization according to traditional sport-specific business models. CrossFit is hugely profitable and has sparked a fitness movement that has attracted and inspired hundreds of thousands of people around the world. CrossFit is now one of the fastest-growing fitness movements in existence. Its wild popularity has been fuelled by a virtual community Internet model that generates revenue streams via affiliates, media and seminars.

Caitlin Ciccone’s Athlete Biography

caitlin_ciccone_2ASM is proud to announce its alliance with 2010 World Cup Ski Cross competitor Caitlin Ciccone. Caitlin is among the world’s premier snow sport athletes and one of the most visible and marketable athletes in winter sports today. A veteran of the US Alpine Ski Team (00-08) and World Cup Circuit (06-08), Caitlin is the USA’s top ranked Ski Cross athlete and is on the verge of securing a 2010 Winter Olympic spot. Caitlin’s dedication to her sport is unmatched and she continues to raise the bar of her athletic potential, setting the standard in the sport of Ski Cross.

Caitlin was raised in Bethlehem, New Hampshire (NH) and began skiing the White Mountains of NH at the age of 2. For the last 21 years Caitlin has traveled the world amassing an impressive list of alpine ski racing accomplishments. She was named to the US Alpine Ski Team at 13, winning the US National Giant Slalom title in 2006 while placing second in the Slalom and Combined disciplines. Caitlin finished second in the US National Giant Slalom standings in 2007.

In 2008, after a stellar alpine career, Caitlin decided to switch to Ski Cross and has never been happier. Incorporating the terrain features traditionally found in freestyle, Ski Cross competitors ski down the course, which is built to encompass both naturally occurring terrain and artificial features like jumps, rollers, and banks. Starting from a field of 16 women, groups of four skiers start simultaneously and attempt to reach the end of the course. The first two to cross the finish line advance to the next round. At the end, the final and small final rounds determine 1st to 4th and 5th to 8th places, respectively. Caitlin describes participating in the sport:

Its such a rush, you always have that nervous stomach cause you never know what’s about to happen. If you’re in control the three others might not be….That’s my newest way of pumping blood through my veins, and switching the adrenaline to full blast!

Caitlin currently lives in Jackson, WY with her best friend and brother Cam. When in town, Caitlin can be found skiing the deep powder of the Tetons in Granite Cannon or chilling with friends.

Please contact ASM at (540) 841-5047 for sponsorship and endorsement opportunities involving Caitlin Ciccone. Caitlin is also accepting direct donations to help fund her World Cup travel schedule and Olympic pursuits at www.caitlinciccone.com

What is Ski Cross

Ski cross (also known as skiercross or skier-X) is a relatively new type of skiing competition. It is based on the motorbike discipline of motocross. Despite it being a timed racing event, it is often considered part of freestyle skiing because it incorporates terrain features traditionally found in freestyle.

In a time trial or qualification round, every competitor skis down the course, which is built to encompass both naturally occurring terrain and artificial features like jumps, rollers, banks — whatever the course builder can imagine. After the time trial, the fastest 16 (in women's events) or 32 skiers (in men's events) compete in a knockout (KO)-style series in rounds of four. A group of four skiers start simultaneously and attempt to reach the end of the course. The first two to cross the finish line will advance to the next round. At the end, the final and small final rounds determine 1st to 4th and 5th to 8th places, respectively.

Competitors are not allowed to pull or push each other during the KO finals. Any intentional contact to the other competitors will be penalized by disqualification or exclusion from the next race.

The International Ski Federation (FIS)'s FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup has recently added ski cross competitions to its calendar in addition to moguls and aerials. You will find the competition calendar, resutls, bio's of athletes, news and more on World Cup, Europa Cup and FIS ranked events.

The International Olympic Committee decided on November 28, 2006, to include ski cross in the programme of the 2010 Winter Olympics at Vancouver. (Wikipedia Ski Cross 2010)
